In 1982, the original concept of North Yorkers for Disabled Persons Inc. (NYDP) was born. All Soul’s Anglican Church requested from The Ministry of Community and Social Services, a description of individuals with a disability for whom housing was difficult to obtain. The Ministry informed them that persons with a communication disability had more difficulty in accessing housing/attendant services. As a result, the congregation determined that priority would be given to persons with a physical disability as well as a communication need. A congregate living concept was considered an optimal solution for this specific population as the consumers would live independently, but have continual access to staff to meet their specific communication needs. Services are provided 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
